Growing up in the Mojave Desert east of Los Angeles, Gregory Michael Hernandez recalls his formative experiences with landscape as "about space and place...and my bodily orientation between earth, sky, and horizon". Moving to Los Angeles to attend college in 1995, he continued to make day trips to the desert for inspiration, documenting his travels with photography. The camera became a tool to translate three-dimensional space into two-dimensions for the purpose of painting. As his photo-collage experiments became more intricate and systematic, he veered away from painting as his primary medium and now creates a conversation between multiple mediums, using them as tools to "get to something else".
