Evan Ziporyn

USA Walker Fellow, 2007

The music of composer Evan Ziporyn combines Western traditions with Indonesian gamelan, resulting in a cross-cultural hybrid that is foreign yet recognizable. He also plays the clarinet, bass clarinet, and soprano saxophone and is a member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Ziporyn is Kenan Sahin Distinguished Professor of Music at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where in 1993 he founded Gamelan Galak Tika, a thirty-member ensemble made up of students, staff, and community members who study and perform traditional and modern Balinese music.
