Deborah Brevoort's plays and musical works often employ theatrical conventions and forms from around the world to explore contemporary American subjects. She has written a Japanese Noh Drama about Elvis Presley (Blue Moon Over Memphis); a musical comedy inspired by world mythologies and Saturday morning cartoons (Coyote Goes Salmon Fishing); and a contemporary drama about the aftermath of terrorism written in the form of a Greek tragedy (The Women of Lockerbie). Her play The Velvet Weapon uses the backstage farce to explore populist democracy and the Velvet Revolution.

She has won numerous awards for her work, including the silver medal in the Onassis International Playwriting Competition, and the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award for The Women of Lockerbie, which is currently being produced around the world.  She is a two-time winner of the Frederick Loewe Award in Musical Theatre for Coyote Goes Salmon Fishing, with composer Scott Davenport Richards and King Island Christmas, with David Friedman.  She received a commission from the EST/Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to write The Blue-Sky Boys, about NASA's Apollo engineers, produced at the Barter Theatre, and a commission from the Virginia Stage Company's American Soil Program to write The Comfort Team about military wives. 

Other works include The Poetry of Pizza, a cross cultural comedy about love, produced at the Purple Rose Theatre; Signs of Life, winner of the Jane Chambers award, and Into the Fire, winner of the Weissberger Award.  Her work is published by Dramatists Play Service, Samuel French and Applause Books and has been produced off-Broadway by the New Group and Women's Project, in London at the Orange Tree Theatre and in numerous regional theatres around the US. 

Deborah is a resident artist with the American Lyric Theater in New York. She is an alumnus of New Dramatists and was one of the original company members with Perseverance Theatre in Alaska.
