By exploring the interrelatedness of historical narratives, forms of amnesia, and contemporary mythology, the works of Brian Clifton and Shinae Lee (NY) focus on the way these themes influence meaning formation and the construction of cultures. Framed by interests in semiotics, psychology, and belief systems, their practices (both collaboratively and independently) rely on extensive research for the production of works that are diverse in both media and conceptual structure.
Their recent collaborative work investigates how the mercurial nature of subjective memory becomes extrapolated at the scale of history, and conversely examining how history can be used as a political mechanism in shaping the collective memory of the past.
