Alyce Santoro is an internationally noted conceptual and sound artist with a background in biology and scientific illustration. Her multimedia "philosoprops" and "subtle reality technologies" (incorporating video, assemblage, and live performance) are part of a broad multi-media, multi-disciplinary experiment into the mysteries inherent in the natural world. She is best known as the inventor of "Sonic Fabric", an audible textile woven from recycled audiocassette tape. Alyce relocated from Brooklyn, NY to the high desert of far west Texas in 2006 for the region's unique land-, light-, and –soundscape, and to explore off-grid living and permaculture. Her work has been exhibited at museums and galleries around the world including the New School for Social Research, the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Samstag Museum in Australia, Trinity College Science Museum in Dublin, and Ballroom Marfa in Marfa, TX. Her awards include a fellowship in New Genres from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, a Keyholder residency at the Lower East Side Printshop in NYC, and an artists' book production grant from Women's Studio Workshop. She has given lectures and authored several articles on the nature of creativity and the intersection of art and science.
