Furniture
My formal artistic training includes a Bachelors and a Masters in Furniture Design. Having grown up in a place where trash is often used to construct houses, furniture making has provided me an outlet to create something that is functional while translating emotions into a three dimensional object. It is a way of expressing myself artistically in a level that is personal and controllable. These art objects are not merely aesthetic, but can be used on a daily basis as well, connecting me to a long tradition of artisans worldwide.
My work can best be described as a series of functional explorations in craft-based disciplines. These works employ textile techniques in the creation of seating objects and materials normally assigned to specific disciplines, capitalizing on their unique properties and drawing upon multiple languages of craft to create a new design perspective. I believe that functional works and their imbued context can be used to address roles in the public and domestic sphere. I believe that we can use preconceived notions of objects and materials as design elements to create a platform for discussing greater cultural issues and form meaningful relationships across regions and cultures that have a lasting affect on the direction of art and design.
