Wind Screen is a proposal for an interactive public space installation on MIT’s campus that, using renewable wind energy and an array of micro-wind turbines, creates a dynamic, sustainable, educational, and engaging temporal environment.
Wind power is an abundant, largely untapped energy source that urgently needs research and development to achieve wider acceptance and implementation. Composed of an architectural-scale lattice of multiple small turbines, Wind Screen will generate and consume energy harvested from the wind, translating wind speed into a visual register and indexing the abundance of this renewable energy source. The project will involve a multi-disciplinary group of students (architecture students, visual arts students and mechanical engineering students), and will heighten awareness around issues of renewable energy and public environments.
Help me fund this temporary outdoor installation that transforms wind into light! Supporters will get an inside peak at the creative and technical process of making this work. The installation will consist of approximately 400 individual wind activated lanterns that will be custom made. For those interested in the individual pieces themselves, you may also receive your own LED wind lanterns in exchange for support.
