The book "UPRISING: Public Demonstrations of Revolutionary Practices, 2008-2012" analyzes, documents, and completes the 5-year UPRISING performance project. The book will explore the project’s strategies of participatory artmaking in a broader context of social change.
The aim of the UPRISING book is to do much more than provide documentation of an art project. The book will use UPRISING as a launching pad for discussion on a range of topics in contemporary radical culture. Hundreds of people in 8 US cities and 5 international locations have participated in UPRISING, so the book also serves to honor the people who have contributed their energy and desire for positive social transformation. There is a whole community of people around UPRISING who are able to offer analysis of the project and assess its creative and interactive strategies. The book will include reflections from people who participated in the UPRISING actions.
In order to produce the UPRISING book, I need to engage a book designer, editor, and writers. I will also need to print the largest possible run of a full-color book. These books will be distributed to donors, sold, and used to attract a publisher for a future re-issue of the book. If additional funds are secured beyond the fundraising goal, these funds will be used to increase the size of the printing run of the book and thereby lower the cost per book.
UPRISING performance/actions are public, participatory demonstrations of revolutionary practices. This means that together with a volunteer cast or some group of community members, 60 original live art works will have been created—each one an attempt to create a public, artistic enactment of the possibilities for a more loving, just and humane present and future. UPRISING actions have engaged hundreds of participants and have taken place in Chicago, Berkeley, New Orleans, Asheville, Brooklyn, Berea, KY, San Francisco, Oshkosh, WI, Moscow, Russia, Copenhagen, Leeds, UK, Skipton, UK, and Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal.
Some of the topics to be explored in the UPRISING book include: what can be considered “revolutionary practices”; sacred intentions manifest through ceremony and ritual; creativity and interactivity within political/social movements; parties and social events as sites of radical contemporary performance work; how UPRISING and other participatory projects struggle for legitimacy in the contemporary art world establishment; and the notion of participation as an aesthetic and political strategy for liberatory and loving social change.
I am an interdisciplinary artist making site-specific performance and project art that is directly political, critically conscious, and community building. I also teach, make ceremonies, and do healing work. My work is documented at nicolegarneau.com.
