We’re the first generation to realize that ours is not a world of infinite resources ... and if we’re not careful ... we’ll lose what we do have forever.
As a result, people now have a greater concern for the environment, a renewed sense of personal responsibility and a deeper commitment to lessen their impact on the world around them.
It’s a time of new solutions, and the building blocks of these ideas?
Words.
Lots of words.
Words with the power to educate ... activate ... and shift an entire society.
After all, people cannot be expected to live more sustainably if they don't even know the words which describe the most basic principles of the movement.
For this reason we have spent the last two years traveling around the United States to document the leading practitioners of sustainability in food and farming. Our goal? To build a new Lexicon of Sustainability (www.thelexicon.org). Those photographed and interviewed on video include Alice Waters, Vandana Shiva, Will and Erika Allen, Paul Stamets, Wes Jackson, Joel Salatin, Novella Carpenter and literally a hundred other individuals across the nation. We’ve traveled to Alaska to document sustainable salmon fisheries with Rangers from Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game, hiked across prairie lands in Kansas, scaled buildings to captured New York’s rooftop farms ... and now we’re preparing to embark upon one of the most exciting phases of our journey: documenting sustainable food traditions and solutions in the American South.
We’re thankful for the support of The Southern Foodways Alliance, which has provided a great deal of insight and legwork to secure a truly remarkable list of individuals for us to document. This great country was founded on the agricultural heritage of the American South and we are eager to document these traditions.
As with every phase of this project, we rely on “photo futures” to fund our work. “Photo Futures” allow individuals, foundations, and companies to fund specific images in the project.
Our hope is to raise the needed funds to travel to the American South this summer and document dozens of stories for the project.
The work will become a series of short films, a traveling photographic exhibition, a book, and lastly an interactive website and e-book where users can add their own terms to the Lexicon.
