Create a premiere online hub and radio show covering arts in the North West
Every day, I’m flooded with dozens of emails locally, regionally and nationally from theatres, dance companies, musicians, publishers, filmmakers and radio producers wanting coverage on my weekly half-hour show. Stage and Studio is poised to become a premiere NW arts magazine both as a radio show, podcast and online streaming on a multimedia state of the art website.
Background
For the last 14 years I've volunteered to produce a weekly arts show called Stage and Studio. It is one of the few places in the Portland community that features the arts. My focus has been on interviews and feature stories focusing on performing, literary and media arts. Each week I spend about 15 hours a week combing through emails, setting up guests and topics, researching & preparing my show script, conducting the live interviews and then editing it, uploading it on the local community radio station’s website and promoting it on Facebook and Twitter. With no budget, Stage and Studio profiles Portland events and artists. Depending on where I travel, I produce feature stories and interviews from Oregon.
The Next Level
I need startup funds to move Stage and Studio to the next level. It is my goal with these funds to travel to other parts of the Northwest to record interviews with artists in rural areas, small towns and larger cities. This funding would also make it possible to hire production assistants and a mixing engineer. I could also have a budget to get contributers from various parts of the NW to send in their reviews and interviews which I could include in the program.
I've created stagenstudio.com on my own. These funds would allow me to turn it into a topnotch multimedia site with regional arts interviews, reviews, and audio and video feature stories.
The goal is to focus on Oregon and Washington each week and get airplay from public radio stations in both states. I will also make a weekly podcast available through iTunes as well as on the StageNStudio.com site.
Focusing on Regional Artists
There is a great need throughout the Northwest for interviews, feature profiles and critical reviews focusing on regional arts. With declining revenues and a poor economy, newspapers continue to layoff arts reporters and critics. Broadcast media has turned away from local coverage of the arts unless it’s related to a film, TV show or celebrity. Most non-profit groups have small or non-existence marketing or advertising budgets and hardworking artists and organizations find it near to impossible to get any kind of publicity or reviews of their work.
With this start-up funding, I could create an impressive model for an online hub and radio show that would be sustainable through more traditional arts funders and underwriters.
