For nearly two decades I have explored illusions of three dimensional space through my use of pattern, line and shape in two dimensional wall work and floor installations. I started expanding my vision into three dimensions in 2008 by using funds from a grant from the City of Los Angeles (COLA) to fabricate multiple open pyramid forms to create a large installation work that interacted with the architecture of the Barnsdall Municipal Art Gallery.

The project I am asking you to help me fund will be the first free-standing, large-scale, sculpture of my career. In the past, I have done several large, site-specific, floor and wall installations that activated the space they occupied, but did not stand alone as singular sculptures. Just as in my wall and floor works, the latticed and stacked trapezoidal shapes planned for this sculpture will shift, meld and reconfigure as the viewer moves around the work and throughout the gallery, sometimes taking form as the elements of the piece interact with one another, and sometimes confounding viewers’ experience of spatial dynamics within the work and the larger gallery space.

The forms will be comprised of sloping, angled exterior walls, with no tops or bottoms, allowing for views into and through the sculpture.

Proposed materials and specifications are as follows

- four stacked professionally fabricated forms will have mirrored Plexiglas interior walls and white enamel exterior wall

- the complete multifaceted sculpture will measure 14x8x5 feet

- interior mirrored surfaces will be visible at every vantage point, reflecting various planes and angles within the work, as well as the architectural details throughout the gallery

This work will be the centerpiece of my solo exhibition at CB1 Gallery in the spring. The work will address aspects of the entire gallery space, which is located in an historic bank building in downtown Los Angeles. I'm very excited about it because it will take my investigation of geometry, line and pattern, and my interest in blurring the line between permanence and impermanence, solid form and illusion, to the next level.

Your support will help fund engineering, research and development, materials and fabrication costs. Any funds raised beyond my minimum goal will go towards packing and crating, trucking and on-site installation expenses. I am very eager to see this work take shape. I hope you will share my enthusiasm and partner with me in bringing this project to life. Please see my website or showcase pages for images and information about my past work.

Congratulations, Timothy! And thanks for the many updates. This has been one of only a handful of projects I've supported who really did a good job of taking me along for the ride, and it was a fun one. You can count on me for more support in the future. Cheers.
