The House Foundation is pleased to announce the Meredith Monk Remix & Interpretations Project, a platform for the production of the new CD Monk Mix: Remixes & Interpretations of Meredith Monk's Music . Funds raised will go directly to paying artists' honoraria, licensing fees, publicity/marketing, and costs associated with producing the CD itself.
Intrinsic to the artistic vision of this project is curator and producer DJ Spooky (Paul Miller), a conceptual artist, writer, and musician who pushes creative boundaries in the fields of visual art, sound art, music, film, media, and graphic art. His work has appeared in a wide variety of contexts such as New York's Whitney Biennial, the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany, the Vienna Kunsthalle, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, New York’s Lincoln Center Festival, Spoleto Festival, Festival D’Automne (Paris) and many others.
Inspiring, defining, and catalyzing this project is Meredith Monk, a major creative force in the performing arts. A leading American composer, singer, director, choreographer, and filmmaker, Meredith has created more than 100 works that traverse the performing and visual arts disciplines. A pioneer in “extended vocal technique” and “interdisciplinary performance,” Meredith creates works that thrive at the intersection of music and movement, image and object, light and sound in an effort to discover and weave together new modes of perception. Since graduating from Sarah Lawrence College (1964), her artistry has been recognized with numerous fellowships, honorary degrees, and awards, including the prestigious MacArthur "Genius" Award in 1995, two Guggenheims, a Brandeis Creative Arts Award, three "Obies," two "Bessies" for Sustained Creative Achievement, in October 2006, an induction into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and 2010 Letter of Distinction from the American Music Center.
Re-Mix Artists are responding to Meredith’s artistic magnitude, and reinterpreting the signature compositions in her repertoire. They are creating exciting new iterations that exist nowhere else, and which will be included on this historic Remix and Interpretations CD.
In describing music’s meaning to her, Meredith has said: “I try never to forget that I enjoy the privilege of engaging in an activity that affirms the spirit of inquiry and allows me to make an offering of what I have found. I am grateful for being part of music, for the magic of music permeating my life.”
We are delighted to share this moment with you – the launch of Monk Mix -- through which Meredith’s friends and fans, some of the most compelling artists working today, join together to re-imagine her work.
