Please help us to help raise $6000 in artist fees for the initial creation phase of inkBoat’s “Line Between,” a multi-disciplinary collaboration, that examines the state of mind found between waking and sleep.

inkBoat has been making innovative dance theater works since 1998, both nationally and internationally, and is regarded by many as one of the most important voices in new performance. It is a unique company, in that it is made up of independent artists from various disciplines, artistic backgrounds and regions of the world who come together in various configurations for each project.

The constellation of collaborators for “Line Between” is a particularly dynamic and electric one. inkBoat founder/dancer Shinichi Iova-Koga will be joined by Korean dancer/composer/musician Dohee Lee, percussionist Suki O’Kane and multi-wind instrumentalist Jason Ditzian

Installation artist, Amy Rathbone, along with architect Frank Lee, will design an intricately detailed set for the dancers to inhabit.  Direction will be by inkBoat’s Dana Iova-Koga. Lighting by Allen Willner.

Together, using bodies, sound, light and instillation, this team of artists will create a breathing landscape evocative of that elusive mind-state we inhabit in the moment that falls between waking and sleep. The boundaries between art and ritual, artist and intercessor, physical and spiritual, post-modern and ancient, will be fantastically blurred.

Korean Shamanism (an integral aspect of Dohee’s study and practice,) directed improvisation, usage of “chance operations” (a la John Cage and Merce Cunningham) conversations with neuroscientists, study of dream analysis, and mining the content of our own dreams will be the tools used to research and develop this evening-length performance work.

We are fortunate to have been given a one-week, full-tech residency in February 2011 to work in ODC’s theater. This is the where the piece will premiere in December, 2011. The chance to feel the performance space early on will inform our entire creation process, and will undoubtedly help the final piece be better integrated with its environment. This phase will be crucial for performers and designers alike, as for “Line Between,” the set and the lighting designers will be creating in direct relationship with the theater, utilizing walls, hanging space, and architectural features, unique to the building, as part of their medium.

Seeking and securing funds to create original dance work is a constant effort, one that often takes more time and energy than the actual practicing and performance of the piece. By making a donation to inkBoat through US Artists, you are helping these artists focus their energies on the creation of this new piece.

The collaborators involved with “Line Between” are stellar, each outstanding in their fields, and your contribution will go directly towards their artist fees for this initial working phase at ODC in February.

I don't quite understand how this works. What happens to the pledges if 6000$ is not raised? Where does the money go? Best of Luck Ivana
