My next project is a feature film that continues to explore themes of loss and regret, but in the re-imagining of a traditional Mexican folk-tale. Set in the middle of the 21st century, La Perdida is a broad re-telling of the old folk-tale of La Llorona combined with the ancient Greek Cassandra myth. It’s a time-travel film that explores the universal themes of loss and redemption while painting it with my own interpretations of the old stories that populated my childhood. It’s a lo-fi sci-fi drama (in the same spirit of Michael Winterbottom’s Code 46 and Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men). Setting it in the near future allows me to rework traditional Mexican motifs and create a unique world.
The long-term goal is the production and completion of La Perdida as an independent feature film. The short-term objective is the completion of the script and a rewrite so that the search for production funding can begin. It is for this purpose that I’ve partnered with United States Artists.
La Perdida is about Sandra, a psychiatric patient in the near future who has lost everything – her freedom, her memories, and most tragically, her family, because of one heinous act. Her husband and son are dead, and though she doesn’t remember how they died, she feels the guilt associated with their loss. Despondent, she illegally travels back in time to stop their impending deaths but ultimately discovers that only she can offer herself true redemption.
The film is set in a near-futuristic, third-world city where anything and everything is for sale. So of course that means Mexico City. The funds raised will provide for a six week research and writing sabbatical in Mexico City this coming winter. Travel, living expenses, and research expenses associated with the completion of the first draft and rewrite of the screenplay are what funds will be used for. My maximum goal, which also includes pre-production expenses, is higher than the $6500, so raising above the minimum would help get the project off the ground. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to help fund a truly independent film.
And yes, the teaser is an homage to a classic lo-fi, sci-fi film. I’m a sucker for a good time travel story…
