Katrina Narratives: Caught Between a Rock and a Hard Place
- Crafts & Traditional Arts
I am proposing to create a series of large 3-dimensional pieces focusing on the desperate plight and suffering of Hurricane Katrina victims, particularly those who were trapped by the storm. The work will move beyond the wall using quilting-related techniques in uncharacteristic ways to transcend boundaries of medium, boundaries of viewpoint, and boundaries of spatial perspective.
The pieces will be significantly oversized to provide a dramatic and arresting viewing experience as well as enabling inclusion of important details. The dimension of the work will encourage more sustained levels of viewer engagement to promote greater depth of understanding, reflection and dialogue. The pieces will be accompanied by embroidered panels listing the names of those who are dead and missing; they were individuals and must not be forgotten or merely lumped into a generalized category of “victim”.
Constructed as a series of interconnected parallel panels, the artworks will be connected by accordion-style hinges making it possible for each to expand/contract, to open/close. Cut-out areas within the center of each panel will enable viewers to see related imagery on successive ones, thereby creating three-dimensional effects from two-dimensional components. It will challenge viewers on many levels as their interaction with the work shifts from passivity to activity, from surface to depth, from distance to intimacy, and from the explicit to the ambiguous.
With your support I will be able to purchase the equipment and materials needed to provide the capabilities, control, maneuverability, capacity, visibility and supports required for the construction work in this format, in this size.
Please join me in taking this “journey of the spirit” to honor those who endured so much, to tell their stories, and to never forget…
