GOLDMINER Visits Chicago

Donating to this project will help fund my trip to Chicago this August for the GOLDMINER project—an anthropological approach to observing the practices of visual artists. Two years ago, as a painter based in New York, I started photographing curiosities surrounding the practices of visual artists. The project is an ongoing archive of my photography and writing of the artists’ examples—categorized into the following themes: MASCOTS, COLLECTED OBJECTS, RITUALS, RESIDUE, MAKESHIFT TOOLS, and HABITAT.

To date, the project includes over 100 artists in the US and abroad. The one rule is that the selections can’t be a direct representation of the artist’s work. In my documentation, I also steer away from typical portraits of the artist or general views of their workspaces. The intention is to provide alternative approaches to understanding contemporary art and a platform for artists to share aspects of their practices that would otherwise remain unseen.

Raising funds for this particular segment of the project is critical in order to visit with artists based in Chicago and other locations in the region. It will also provide the funds I need to complete my second artist residency for the project at Threewalls in Chicago (a non-profit art organization) for the month of August. A native of Wisconsin, I will be documenting the curiosities of artists in Chicago and in a selection of cities within driving range—such as Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin among others in the Midwest. Your contribution will go directly towards supporting my air travel expenses, transportation to and from the artists' studios, a residency fee, an artist fee for myself, my per diem expenses for meals, and ground transportation to and from the airport.

This trip is the first of many regionally-focused, fundraising campaigns that I will be launching through United States Artists. To date, I have visited with artists in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, and Berlin among others. The project is internationally-focused, and I will be continuing to organize trips to more locations within the US and abroad. A selection of artists includes: Tauba Auerbach, Dana Schutz, The Clayton Brothers, Diana Al-Hadid, Judy Ledgerwood, Tony Tasset, Nick Cave, Michelle Grabner, Theaster Gates, Kay Rosen, Nicholas Frank, Peter Halley, and Jim Shaw.

Thanks for your comment, Bill! Shaun O'Dell's examples actually landed in the Habitat and Rituals themes (see link below). The 'creative use' of his and Emily Prince's apartment building basement is among one of my favorites: http://www.thegoldminerproject.com/wordpress/shaun-odell-emily-prince/

This appeals to my own crap-collector disorder. I really want to know what mascots and collected objects Shaun O'Dell keeps. I love his drawings. And his band Swords and Sandals is insanely brilliant. This project sounds great. Yeah!
