“...and though the holes were rather small, they had to count them all, now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.” - John Lennon
We’re raising $6000 to complete my new CD Four Thousand Holes, to be released in October by Cold Blue Music.
The title track is a showpiece for pianist Stephen Drury and percussionist Scott Deal, and The Light Within features the California EAR Unit. Both of these recent pieces employ electronic “auras” derived from the instruments to create orchestral landscapes with small ensembles.
Four Thousand Holes
I came of age playing rock and roll. And though I left that musical world long ago, Four Thousand Holes is an effort to re-appropriate and reclaim for myself something of my own musical past.
For the first time I’ve chosen to restrict myself to those most basic elements of Western music - major and minor triads. Approaching these simple chords as found objects, I’ve superimposed them in multiple streams of tempo, to create darker harmonies and lush fields of sound.
The Light Within
Sitting in the silence of their meetings, Quakers seek to “greet the light within”. In his work, the artist James Turrell (a Quaker himself) says that he aspires to address “the light that we see in dreams”.
A companion piece to The Light That Fills the World (also recorded on Cold Blue), the harmonic colors of The Light Within are more complex and mercurial than those of its outward-looking predecessor. Within this introspective sonic space, the light changes more quickly, embracing darker hues and deeper shadows.
