FiberPhiladlephia 2012 is an international biennial event that showcases innovative textile and fiber. artists The event takes place throughout Greater Philadelphia and will begin this spring. FiberPhiladelphia began as a few loosely organized biennial exhibitions of center city galleries. In recent years it has grown into an event of national reputation that includes galleries, arts organizations and museums. The breadth of renowned international and next generation visual artists is stunning. Yet historically, any focus on fiber artists of color at this conference has been limited, despite our long and storied legacy in these media.
By highlighting 6 contemporary African American Fiber Artists with local and national reputation, this exhibit seeks to correct that omission. In addition there will be expert led workshops for a select group of middle school students. These workshops would serve to introduce underserved youth to artists of national caliber and create an awareness of fiber as an applied art and as a means of personal expression.
The exhibition with corresponding workshops and artist talks is in partnership with Art Sanctuary of Philadelphia. The mission of Art Sanctuary is to use the power of black art to transform individuals, unite groups of people, and enrich and draw inspiration from the inner- city. Art Sanctuary has a long recognized reputation for commitment to the community it serves. By partnering with Art Sanctuary we hope to forge a relationship that draws from their mission and raises awareness of fiber artists of color.
The funds raised will offset the production costs of mounting such an exhibit. Thus far, I have received an Art and Change Grant from the Leeway Foundation in support of this project. However, there are many expenses associated with producing an exhibit. I am seeking a minimum of $5000 to cover the costs of space rental, mailing, shipping, design and printing of booklets and invitations. Any funds raised above that amount will go towards a photographer, videographer, administrative assistance and project management. Please help to make this exhibit a reality.
