I have been invited to exhibit in the inaugural SUR: Biennial exhibition, "Adaptation, Assimilation, and Acculturation" this October at the Cerritos College Art Gallery just outside of Los Angeles. This will be the first biennial exhibition of my career. My project Cityscape (working title) is an exciting site specific, outdoor digital mural. Approximately 40'x7', it will be made of window wraps. These wraps will be made of high-resolution quality vinyl graphics and will dress part of windows. I believe the images of the buildings in the Los Angeles cityscape are not what they seem…they are architectural compositions of the shape of Los Angeles’ skyscrapers made up of human figures in various morphing emotions, poses and fashions that will symbolize acculturation. It is my hope that the mural transforms the courtyard and appearance and energy at its basic level, while also challenging the viewer’s perceptions of implied space, sense of culture, and sense of place.
This large-scale mural will complement the existing architecture and design leading up to the entrance of the gallery. As with most of my past installations, this is yet another huge project! Cerritos College will provide me with a base stipend, however, my vision for my work greatly exceeds that stipend. For this project I am interested in raising $5,000 to realize my vision.
The process entails meticulous photo shoots with models in various poses, fashions and emotions. The photos are then manipulated to cut out the figures, color correct, etc. I then take the figures to create a composition of buildings in a cityscape. From there, the images are sent to the window wrap printers for printing and installing.
It is my hope that the mural becomes a conversation catalyst for thought, perceptions and reflections on one’s place in history, lineage and identity. Its outdoor placement makes it accessible at any time for the community of Cerritos College and general public. I am especially excited to produce this work for a biennial that will showcase new, creative works of local artists who have been influenced by the cultures of Mexico, Central and South America. Three venues in Whittier and Cerritos were carefully chosen to host public exhibits, panels and events, as these are predominantly Latino communities on the east side of Los Angeles that traditionally has not seen a lot of major art exhibits.
Your support in any amount is greatly appreciated. Any additional funds raised will go toward assistance with the various stages of the project. All supporters will receive e-mailed updates on the project, various perks, and great cosmic credits! ;)
