Citizens-We: Portraits of a Neighborhood

DC

Download Video: Closed Format: MP4 Open Format: OGG / WebM

The Citizens-We Project is a photographic portrait of the people in the neighborhoods of Adams Morgan & Mt. Pleasant in Washington, DC. The project consist of a collection of twenty to thirty 24 x 30 Black & White prints produced with the Epson 7890 wide format 24 inch printer. These photographs will be exhibited throughout the neighborhood in the storefronts and public places. They will also be exhibited as a collection of images in a traditional gallery setting and as an online gallery.

This neighborhood has been my home for the past thirty years. I photograph its citizens in a traditional “street photography” style. While I may know many of my neighbors, this approachh as an anonymous nature. I feel it is time to approach my neighborhood in a more formal and direct way. I plan is to setup an impromptu studio at several locations, and invite people near these locations to be photographed and to give their insights and observations about their neighborhood. I also want the subjects of these photos to invite their friends and family to be photographed.

In my proposal request is for $5000.00. These funds will be used to acquire a new 24 inch, wide format ink jet photographic printer and the support materials such as paper, ink, exhibition handling & hardware, and digital storage for the manage the project. If I am fortunate to exceed this amount, extra funding will be used for managing the marketing and the production of the project’s online presence. I will also be exploring other local funding sources in support of the project.

I look at the Citizens-We Project as a way neighborhood citizens can come together and celebrate and acquaint themselves with their similarities and diversity. As an artist I’m looking to create anew body of work that will express my vision and voice about the people I live and interact with everyday.

Hi Jarvis. Great project. Liked you on Facebook, tried to pledge $25, but when they ask me to go to Amazon, the link fails. Thought you should know. I'll try again tomorrow. Best of luck to you. Thomas.
