The first week of February was perhaps the most eventful as the CAFAM Granny Squared project got the official support from city hall and Yarn Bombing Los Angeles received a granny square from a celebrity participant!

At this point we have 456 participants from 47 states and 24 countries around the globe. We have already received over 7,000 crocheted granny squares and started sewing the 5 inch squares together to create the colossal granny squares. As this is a major undertaking in and of itself, we have the following granny sewing parties all around the town:

Wow, we are getting there!... So far, we've stitched together enough grannies to make two 18' tall columns of orange and white stripes!!! Yup, that's what we've been working on during the holidays, sewing together the grannies that our participants have been crocheting! :-)

At this point we have a community of 277 participants who are crocheting the individual granny squares and new artists & crafters are signing up every day. We have already received 1734 of the 5000 squares we need to cover the facade of the Craft and Folk Art Museum. With new grannies arriving at our studio at the 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica, CA on a daily basis, looks like we'll be in stitching mode for a while!

    more to follow soon

Our reaction to the first of the crowd sourced crocheted granny squares Yarn Bombing Los Angeles received back in mid November 2012, which pretty much sums up our excitement when we receive work or feedback from any participant at any point!

We just got 160 granny squares from Susan Cabianco, Farmington, NM that put the total number of squares received over the 1500 mark!!!

We couldn't be happier with the public outreach component of our work which is creating a platform for hundreds of artists and crafters to collaborate for a public art project.

It's about community building through participatory, collaborative and public art practices... and also about having the resources to realize this grassroots effort :-)
Yarn Bombing Los Angeles will cover the facade of the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles in crowdsourced granny squares.
