Working alongside graphic designer Jonathan Maghen, Textfield, I propose to create an Artist’s Book that is both a catalog of my work, as well as an art project of its own accord.  This book will include images of my work and studio process over the last ten years.  It will also have features that push ideas of an artist’s monograph into an experimental and exploratory realm.

An important component of this project is to ensure that a percentage of the books printed be distributed by the DUC program.  The Distribution to Underserved Communities Library Program distributes books on contemporary art and culture free of charge to rural and inner-city libraries, schools and alternative reading centers nationwide, in order to further a more egalitarian access to art and culture.  www.ducprogram.org.

Inspired by the format of “how to” books, the process in which a few of my works is made will be laid out, step by step.  The sculpture ideas will be simply and clearly presented, although the ideas themselves tackle the complexities of how objects are perceived and shared in contemporary culture.

There will also be a section that shows how my sculpture enters the world – through exhibition and studio events, and how my community interacts with it.  These sculptures are conversation pieces, reasons to meet in public, and social lubricants.

When my sculptures end up in a friend’s or collector’s home, the way in which they become part of their owner’s daily life will be documented in the book.

We may design a poster that folds to become the cover of the book.  We may play with how the book’s Index will be presented.  Other book design ideas will be explored, as I work closely with Jonathan.

My work has been exhibited internationally in London, Munich and Naples, as well as in galleries and museums in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.  It has been collected by the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, and by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
