Anupubbasikkhā is the gradual training taught by the Buddha and practiced in the Theravada tradition. The work traces the path from the shock and alienation that comes with the realization of the futility of a normal life through deep realization on the far shore. If I reach my minimum goal it will fund my work composing the piece for 8 months. If I reach my maximum goal it will allow me to update my studio to create a work that is more interactive and technologically cutting edge.
The work is in three movements:
I. Tanhā - craving for sensual pleasures
II. Samvega - The oppressive sense of shock, dismay, and alienation that comes with realizing the futility and meaninglessness of life as it's normally lived; a chastening sense of one's own complacency and foolishness in having let oneself live so blindly; and an anxious sense of urgency in trying to find a way out of the meaningless cycle.
III. Pasada - clear and serene confidence in the path
Far and away most piano concertos are composed for piano and orchestra. The use of the concert band is not unprecedented but still rare.
Rarer still is the inclusion of elaborate electronic music. This work will include 6-channel playback of both recorded electronics and live-mixed manipulation of the acoustic instruments. The production will include the use of Abelton Live, Apple Logic, and MAX/MSP. The backbone and source material of the prerecorded music will be taken from recordings taken from chants from Buddhist communities across Minnesota.
