An Array of Essence is a transformative project of nothing to something that examines evolution and the scale of natural forms from the small (snail) to the large (solar system).
The idea for An Array of Essence, transpired from a recent trip to Playa Grande, Costa Rica searching for fertile material to create a work that captured the metamorphosis of matter. Playa Grande is the nesting ground of the largest marine reptile, the leatherback turtle.
I was studying snail patterns in the sand when I came across a marine biologist measuring multi-colored snails the shape of an oversized olive. He was fitting the snails with transmitters so their habitat could be tracked.
I am fascinated by our quest for the unknown through science so it was fitting that this meeting provided an insight into the content of this project.
My research continued up rivers, through forests studying monkeys, crocodiles, banana trees, butterflies, dragonflies studying rock formations and wave patterns continually drawing and collecting samples. I was looking for color, texture, movement and ultimately the life force in all these things so I could capture that energy in this multi-medium installation and film.
This project breaks ground for it’s unique use of shaped paintings as a theatrical property to create an animation that balances between 2 and 3 dimensions.
