The romance between sustainability and architecture is a seductive topic. Combining the two in a picturesque and undeveloped setting is a perfect backdrop for the love affair. New eco-friendly technologies such as electricity generating solar panels liberate architecture from the urban grid creating new opportunities for architects and those who desire the isolation of nowhere. Some time ago I began an investigation of small prefabricated living spaces deployed in sensitive landscapes with a low environmental impact. Two main types of shelters were evaluated: a prefabricated building (similar to DWELL magazine interests) and an ephemeral camping-like structure. Drawn to the idea of creating a hybrid and blurring the boundaries between the two I envisioned modern comfort without the symbols of camping. For many years I have longed to escape the city and discover eco-destinations to sketch and find inspiration in solitude. Therefore, I am proposing a project to build and test an ecologically sound shelter that can access and survive in off-grid environments while providing a space for creative activities.

Influenced by prefabricated modern architecture and vehicle design the mini studio is planned to be a Department of Transportation ‘fifth wheel’ travel trailer. This Modern Recreational Vehicle, or MRV-1 can be towed to a leased property yet to be determined. When the MRV-1 is deployed the design provides methods to transform and hide its qualities as a vehicle thus integrating with its surroundings. For one year data will be obtained to document its technical performance of energy use, comfort and creative performance of its guests.

To execute the project we will acquire the necessary parts and hire specialists to assemble the structure. Professional services will be contracted with a structural and mechanical engineer to assist in performance and construction specifications. Over a period of approximately 10 months the prototype will be constructed.

Please support the access:nature project’s goal of $120,000. One hundred percent of the funds we receive will go towards the materials, parts, and 3rd party labor and services, and land lease. In the event the project is over funded we will improve the performance specifications and procure higher quality materials, acquire a more valuable land lease, and test/document the project for a greater period of time. Thank you for your consideration.
