We are a performance dance and visual art company based in Seattle, Washington, who has been working together since 2004. Last year we were honored with a NEFA National Dance Project Production Grant for our newest project A Crack in Everything, which we have chosen to tour throughout 2011 and 2012. We are seeking funds for the development of A Crack in Everything into a fully examined, exposed and multidimensional installation-designed to tour in conjunction with the performance presented in Seattle, New York, Massachusetts, Texas, Oregon, Maine, and more.
A Crack in Everything (ACIE) is a dance and visual experience inspired by the 458 BCE Greek Tragedy The Oresteia written by Aeschylus. ACIE is an experiment in heightened realities, permeability and containment creating a world in which the visual elements of the performance and installation have lives of their own. ACIE mirrors The Oresteia by challenging the viewers understanding of perception, time, cause and effect, justice and retaliation.
The goals of the ACIE installation include creating 3-D animation projections, false walls, video projection, and time-based motion tracking. Our idea is to create an installation piece in conjunction with the performance that immerses the viewer in the life size video, sound and environment. This summer, we worked passionately and diligently on the development of the choreography and the design of our set and installation as fellows of the MacDowell Colony and at Jacob’s Pillow for a Creative Development Residency.
We realize that not everything can be said, felt, seen, expressed, understood, conveyed and examined in a single medium. Our desire to create whole, fully examined, exposed and multifaceted work has lead us to creating and presenting ACIE as performance, sculptural video installation and photography. The funds we are seeking will help to cover the costs of materials, our work time, as well as assistant labor, and touring. Though our minimum goal is $12,000, all additional funds raised up to $15,000 will allow us to fully realize the entire world of A Crack in Everything.
We want to create an environment where the viewer becomes absorbed in the dance by feeling as if they are replacing the dancer. We will do this by placing a video of choreography from the performance that is within two-mirrored walls facing each other, creating an infinity effect. As the viewer enters the space between the two walls they will essentially be standing where the dancer in the video was when we created the video. This image of the dancer will both go forward and reverse creating an endless looping image where a viewer can come and experience the work at any moment.
Although we have been honored this year with funding from the National Dance Project, the NPN Creation Fund and the Trust for Mutual Understanding and Dance Theater Workshop Suitcase Fund, our project has expanded and needs further support.
With your help we can design, construct, and tour the installation of A Crack in Everything in conjunction with the performances.
A great thanks to you for your consideration.
