Penland School of Crafts
Penland School of Crafts is a national center for craft education dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Located in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, the school offers workshops for students of all skill levels in books and paper, clay, drawing and painting, glass, iron, metals, photography, letterpress and printmaking, textiles, wood, and other media. Penland sponsors three-year artist residencies, two-year core fellowships, archives, a gallery and visitors center, and community collaboration programs.
The school's focus on excellence, its long history, and its inspiring, retreat setting have made it a model of experiential education. Penland is a stimulating, transformative, egalitarian place where people love to work, feel free to experiment, and often exceed their own expectations. Penland School of Crafts is a nonprofit, tax-exempt institution.
All of the artists whose projects appear on this page are current or past participants in the Penland School of Crafts Resident Artist Program. This program seeks to enrich the total educational experience at Penland by providing a stimulating, supportive environment for artists at transitional points in their careers. Penland resident artists are full-time, self-supporting craftspeople who live and work at the school for three years.
